Finance Elite Seminar (Workshop 5): The advantages of taking financial planning courses if you have an accounting background

Speaker: Sherri, an FCPA member and financial controller, possesses over 21 years’ financial management experience in a listed company. She is the financial manager for the Asia-Pacific area of the world’s largest collegiate honour society, headquartered in Atlanta, USA, and is in charge of accounting in Australia, New Zealand, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, including Projects & Business Improvement, Budget Management and Cash Flow Forecasting, Auditing and Financial Planning.

On 16 August 2014, Sherri was invited to APEI as one of our elite guests, and imparted to us the advantages of taking financial planning courses if you have an accounting background. In the seminar, Sherri explained why financial planning is essential for all businesses. The main reasons are as follows:

  • The business is more likely to fail without a financial plan
  • It can help with everyday costs
  • It can help the owner/manager focus on the future of the business
  • The owner won’t be able to access financial support without one
  • It can help with marketing decisions
  • It can quickly identify a financial downturn
  • It can measure progress
  • It can spot sales trends and capitalise on them
  • It will help the owner/manager better understand the bottom line

Furthermore, Sherri gave us an example to explain the importance of financial planning. From an accountant’s point of view, Sherri emphasised the necessity of a Diploma of Financial Planning (DFP) when giving customers advice regarding financial planning. Only when you are a certificated financial planner can you legally make suggestions about financial planning to customers.

The following intake dates TBA.
